Watch Me Jumpstart

Happy Birthday, Dad.

Today's is my father's 81st birthday. Here he is in his baseball playing prime when in the Army -- just a few short years ago.  He is the one on the far right of the picture. He's a great man.

Best book purchase for your new Kindle - http://www.amazon.com/Use-of-Weapons/dp/B0015DWLTE/

Ian M Banks' "Use of Weapons"  is available for the Kindle for only $1! This is one of Banks' "Culture" novels -- and one of my favorites. My favorite is "Player of Games" the first one I read and second published but it's not available for the Kindle yet, so visit your local library instead.

Finished Brian Slattery's "Liberation" -- I expected much more, frankly

We discussed it at our book group last night. General disappointment, though @dawnoftheread liked it as a "romp." I found the satire heavy-handed -- and the politics and economics almost invisible. Found the treatment of slavery odd -- more like a pantomime than anything like what might happen. Tried to read it as an allegory of redemption of US and US policy -- but couldn't get there.

Have you hurled today?

This is sort of an ad -- but I have always loved these guys' products, and their new tagline is perfect. If you are into siege machines (and who isn't?) you should check them out. I have built a couple of the desktop models and they are great fun. http://www.catapultkits.com

while you are at it, you should read (or re-read) Jim Paul's classic: http://www.amazon.com/Catapult-Harry-Build-Siege-Weapon/dp/0156005565/
