Hopefully, you have seen her TED talks. (If not, you should) Or maybe you have read about her non-profit VC, the Acumen Fund. Last night, I was lucky enough to attend a small reading and reception for her in honor of her new book, "The Blue Sweater". The reading was great, and this is a moving and important book. Ms. Novgoratz's approach -- not only focussing on bottoms-up micro-financing, nor relying on top-down big-agency charity to provide the necessary dignity to those in need seems very powerful. What Acumen is doing can be a model for the bridge between those micro-funding intitiaves that focus on the individual, and the large governmental/International efforts that focus on whole populations. Something in the middle, that scales from the individual to larger, entrprenurial ventures holds the promise to create lasting change.
Her story, and the stories she relates, are very compelling. The reading is at 7:30. I think Chris Anderson, the visonary behind the TED Conference, will be there as well. It would be well worth your while.
